To the members of the Virginia Defense Force:

On this 4th of July weekend, we celebrate the birth of our nation, marking the bold declaration of independence in 1776 when our founders stood united for liberty, self-governance, and the pursuit of freedom. This day honors their courage to forge a nation grounded in principles of equality and opportunity, a legacy we carry forward with pride. When you wear your uniform, wear it well, wear it with pride, and know the legacy you represent.

We celebrate Independence Day not just as a historical milestone but as a reminder of the enduring values that define us: values you embody through your service in the Virginia Defense Force and in the community. Your dedication to protecting our communities, supporting civil authorities, and upholding the safety and security of the Commonwealth reflects the same spirit of sacrifice and commitment that sparked our nation’s founding.

We serve because the freedoms won on that historic day are not guaranteed: they must be preserved through vigilance, unity, and selfless duty. Whether you’re training to respond to emergencies, assisting in times of crisis, or standing ready to defend our way of life, your service ensures that the ideals of liberty and justice remain strong for future generations. 

As we gather with family and friends, let us reflect on the courage of those who came before us and renew our resolve to protect the freedoms they fought for. Thank you for your unwavering service to Virginia and our nation. Happy Independence Day!
